Desktop Defender 2010 is known to be a fake security client that does little to help your computer and can even cause data loss. After the fake scan is done the user is then prompted to register and purchase the product to remove the results. If you are already infected with this threat then you will want to read this Desktop Defender 2010 removal guide. It seems this program is from the same makers as the Conrtoaviro program because it shares the same interface just with different graphics and name. It has some very nice Windows vista design elements. The purpose of this is to make it more credible. This program is well known to disable the Windows Task Manager and the registry editor. You will find your you do not have your computer control anymore.
It will pose problems to your Internet connection, including not being able to update your anti-virus programs, or similar programs. Be careful of the following methods used by malware like Desktop Defender 2010 to propagate themselves and to infect computers:
Fake online scanners. They will claim to be new, free and more. You will be prompted to install or run a small program that is pretending to be something like a video codec but in reality it’s a virus.
Fake codecs. This is a common method for malware like Desktop Defender 2010 to infect system.
Such fake codecs can be installed through what is called a drive by download. You will find this method in many websites, either ones created for that purpose or others that have been hacked. Example would be you were browsing a given website and the website push a download unto your computer. Most of the time updated security clients will block the installs but that is simply most of the time. What was pushed… was the malware disguised. Because this threat is very hard to remove we do recommend most people hire an expert to remove the threat for them. Computer repair can be very expensive but a great place to go with out having a huge bill is this Online Computer Repair site. The cost is very low over similar companies. The thing that reall bugs most people is once this software is installed on your computer it will then create junk false files that serve no purpose and then they call the files they create virus threats. The more the better. This threat will add it’s self into the registry so it auto starts on boot. , On bootup it will always run a scan. Now a fake scan is ran and you will see the client claiming all kinds of false viruses installed. The whole purpose of this program is to scare you into making a purchase of the bogus client. In a nut shell the scan will just scan and show you the false results but will tell you to purchase the full version to protect your computer. Given those are all fake files with a fake report, you already guessed that Desktop Defender 2010 only wants to steal your money. Purchasing a full version only gives criminals your money and they will keep doing this to other people. Desktop Defender 2010 was programmed to block many applications and features, so you do not delete this malware so easily. Often times this fake client will dsiable the security client installed on the computer so you will not be able to use it to remove this threat. It will often block other online security tools and sites. Others application, like System Restore and the Registry Editor, are disabled once your computer is infected by the rogue program. In my testing of this threat we also had our browser settings highjacked and were getting re-directs to the sales page of this program.
You should first, rather than believing this fake program, remove Desktop Defender 2010 . To remove such malware you will need to first terminate the running process called DesktopDefender2010.exe.
