Initially named as Decatur Staleys, the organisation was created by the A. E. Staley Company of Decatur, Illinois in 1919 as a company team. The company hired George Halas and Edward “Dutch” Sternaman in 1920 to run the team, and turned over full control of the organisation to them in 1921. George Halas managed pro football and the Decatur Staley’s in 1920 and set membership at $100 per franchise. The Staley’s marked a 10-1-2 record in that first season as each player earned $1,900 for the season. The Chicago Bears won their first title in 1921 with a 9-1-1 mark. The first key signing took place in 1925 when the Bears endorsed Red Grange to a deal. Halas then brought Grange and the Bears on a coast-to-coast barnstorming tour in which the franchise played 16 games in nine weeks. The first game of that stretch was played before 36,000 at the clubs home site, Wrigley Field.
The Bears have been successful in nine Professional American Football league championships (eight National Football League Championships and Super Bowl XX). The Bears have the most members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with 26 members. The Bears have also recorded more regular season and overall victories than any other National Football League Franchise. The Bears recorded their 700th win on December 7, 2008.
The achievement of the playoff game led the National Football League to establish a championship game. In the very first National Football League Championship, the Bears played against the New York Giants, winning them 23–21. The franchises met again in the 1934 National Football League Championship where the Giants, wearing sneakers beat the Bears 30–13 on a cold, icy day at the Polo Grounds.
