Afraid of toxic mold? When most of us are told that we have MOLD growing at our home or business, we immediately become scared and think of it as being toxic. Why do we become so anxious of something that should be so familiar to us?
Perhaps hyped up accounts in the news may be to blame of people burning their house down in order to get rid of mold. Perhaps, uninformed home-improvement television shows could contribute to this skewed view of mold. The Bible, Leviticus, does not help by saying that if mildew (type of mold) is on the walls, the stones should be torn out and if the mildew reappears, the house should be torn down.
If you ever experienced mold on your walls similar to the picture on the right, you will soon realize that this does NOT necessarily mean that your entire house needs to be torn down. If the issues of the affected area can be adequately addressed, you’re good to go.
Most of us have visible mold somewhere in the house. Have you inspected the grout on your bathroom tiles lately or your shower curtains?
The truth is that mold is used to concoct valuable medicines to treat our ailments.
How about some of the delicious foods such as cheeses, breads made with yeast and many edible mushrooms? They may not be mold but they belong under the same fungi family kingdom.
Mold spores are ubiquitous, located all over the place. We inhale thousands, of mold spores everyday.
Yes, mold can be toxic to an individual depending on the sensitivity of the individual that is exposed to it, the type of mold and the concentration. But for most of us, a few thousand mold spores a day goes unnoticed.
As far as toxicity is concerned, isn’t this true of any substance?
Did you know that you can die from the intake of too much oxygen?
The point that I’m trying to make is…
Mold is everywhere, we need only to learn how to live with it to control it effectively.
Mold growth is like the houseguest you can’t get rid of. The sad truth is that most of the time, we are inviting the mold to come in by providing it with comfortable living quarters. Who would want to leave in that situation?
Get Your Houseguest to Leave
There are three things that mold needs in order to flourish. If you can get rid of just one of those three things, your mold will leave and never come back. They are:
- Comfy temperature.
- Water to drink (moisture, humidity).
- Food to eat (dust, dirt, leftover food, wet drywall, etc.).
Unfortunately, the temperature range and moisture levels that make your mold happy are those that are comfortable to humans also. Therefore, the only factor that you can really control without compromising your comfort is the food source.
By getting rid of the food source (dirt, grime, dust, etc.) your mold will have no where to grow, be dissatisfied and leave.
Use the Right Cleaners
In most cases, you can just use the proper cleaners that are not harmful to humans, pets or the environment and your houseguests of the mold species will be no more.
If you think you don’t have mold in your house…put out a piece of bread for a few days. You’ll see some colorful mold colonies but you may be lucky to have attracted some other houseguests (of the multi-legged kind) as well.
Are you scared of the words “Stachybotrys” or “Aspergillus”? Don’t have the bread tested or you may be in for a rude awakening.
